International Volunteers Day 5 December

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Aussies spend 1 hour 34 minutes a day volunteering.
ACT Wildlife recognises that our volunteers go above and beyond that number regularly and we are deeply grateful to all our amazing volunteers on call for the wildlife of Canberra and our team.
We could not do what we do without all of you and want to extend our warmest thank you to the carers, the phone operators, the rescuers, transporters, food transporters, browse and grass collectors, events team, marketing team, website and IT team, finance team, calendar team, fundraising team and all involved in keeping this organisation going strong.

Bat Talks In Commonwealth Park

Join us on the following dates in Rhododendron Garden in Commonwealth close to The National Capital Exhibition building at Regatta Point Parkes.

  • Thursday 12 December 7.30 – 8.30 pm
  • Sunday 19 January 7.30 – 8.30 pm
  • Saturday 22 February 7 – 8pm

In the talks we will outline why flying foxes come to Canberra, why they like Commonwealth Park, and what they do when they are here.  At the end of the talk, we invite the audience to witness the nightly flyout when the bats head off to look for food.  No need to book, just come along and find out about these extraordinary animals.

The Wildlife Friendly Netting Swap

Use netting that protects your fruit and our wildlife.

Flying-foxes, possums, birds and other wildlife get tangled in netting and can die from injuries they suffer.

The ACT Government banned the use of large aperture netting in April 2024.

How can you help protect them? Use wildlife friendly netting or don’t use netting at all.

To receive new wildlife friendly netting, for free, bring your old large mesh netting to the
ACT Wildlife office 2 Dairy Road Fyshwick. Check the swap times below. We may make more times available in the
future.

The free replacement netting comes in only 2 sizes:

  • 4m x 4m sheet of netting
  • 4m x 10m sheet of netting

The swap is approximately 1:1. For example bring in netting from two trees, and we’ll give you two 4m x 4m nets or one 4m x 10m

  • Only white netting is being given out, as animals are more able to see and avoid it.
  • Vegetable garden netting can also be swapped.

Who is eligible?

  • ACT householders with large mesh netting (your finger goes through the netting).

Businesses are not eligible.

Residents living outside the ACT are not eligible

Net swap dates

Bring you old netting to our Jerrabomberra Wetlands office, Dairy Road, Fyshwick ACT 2609 between 10:30am and 1pm on the following days:

  • 30 November
  • 7 December (NOT 2 December as previously stated)

2025 dates coming soon.
