Possum Course

Our Possum course has now been divided into two parts:

  1. Care of Sick and Injured Possums
  2. Hand-rearing Joey Possums

Care of Sick and Injured Possums

Part 1 is a 1.5 hr training, delivered as a Powerpoint via Zoom and covers;

    1. A brief overview of the possums and gliders in the ACT, before concentrating on the brushtail possum since this is the dominant species.
    2. Reasons for coming into care and how we manage intake.
    3. Basic information needed to undertake handling and care of possums and gliders.

The training includes a manual and will enable a you to care for possums in an outdoor aviary.

Hand-rearing Joey Possums

Part 2 training is hands-on and group size will depend on numbers. It covers:

    1. The stages of development of the brushtail possum.
    2. Basic handling and examination.
    3. Practical sessions on the feeding, toileting and housing of young joeys and discussion on their subsequent release into the wild.
    4. A short discussion on the use of ACT Wildlife’s database Wildman for carers.

The training includes a manual and will enable a you to care for joey possums.
